The NJBLF grant program consumes the lion’s share of the NJBLF budget. It has provided grants to hundreds of worthy applicants during the past decade.

+ Emergency Grant Program
The New Jersey Bankruptcy Lawyers Foundation is pleased to announce the implementation of its Discretionary Funds program, named New Beginnings, aimed at dispersing funds to applicants on an emergent basis to assist them in the payment of their overdue, necessary bills and invoices for items such as heating oil, medical bills, automobile repairs, etc. The Foundation has been accepting applications for distributions since February 2005. Attached to this notice is an application form that the Foundation asks the pro bono attorney to complete and return to the address listed on the form. Please be specific in responding to the questions, especially question #3. If accepted, a check will be sent directly to the creditor. In the event this causes a problem or hardship, or payment is contingent upon the occurrence of a future event (such as acceptance of a settlement agreement), the Foundation will entertain requests from counsel to have the funds made payable to the attorney’s Trust Account, with such requests to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. In some cases, payment will be withheld until all conditions have been met. Please note that funds are limited. For that reason, the Foundation requests that attorneys carefully screen the applications prior to submission. Not all clients that are eligible for pro bono services need the added assistance to pay their creditors. Many pro bono clients are able to obtain the funds necessary to pay the creditor either in a lump sum or through installment payments. To ensure that all qualified needs can be met, the Foundation has established several guidelines for applications: a. Applications will only be accepted from attorneys for pro bono clients referred through a qualified Legal Services/Legal Aid program, a law school pro bono program, any New Jersey Legal Services branch office or the Legal Services Hotline. b. Applicants will be offered only one opportunity to obtain funds, and cannot request or expect to receive such funds as a monthly expenditure. c. A normal grant is $750 per applicant. In extraordinary circumstances a grant may exceed that limit up to $1,250 but the extraordinary circumstances must be detailed. The Foundation members welcome your suggestions, thoughts, comments and overall feedback on the process. We all hope that the Foundation will continue to expand in future years and make more monies available to as many applicants as possible. The Foundation assumes no obligation to accept any application. Acceptance shall be in the sole discretion of the panel assigned to review the request and even worthwhile applications may need to be turned down for any reason including but not limited to a failure to submit a complete application.

+ Seton Hall Grant Program
The NJBLF also provides substantial support for the Foreclosure Clinic at Seton Hall Law School where students receive financial support to help them with their education while, at the same time, those students provide assistance to those who potentially could be losing their homes.
+ Rutgers Grant Program
Rutgers plans to use the Foundation’s gifts 65% for student stipends, 25% for client appointment travel and parking, and 10% for Project supplies and equipment. Our students, many of whom are first-generation and often come from families with lower income, are so grateful for financial support. And of course the clients are equally grateful for help with travel expenses. Especially in the southern counties, they often travel quite a distance for consultations with the pro bono attorneys. Sometimes they meet on Zoom, but I think the experience is richer for everyone when they can meet in person at the law school. Finally, since we sometimes travel to serve clients in the Wizmur, Stern and VITA projects, having portable printers with us is a big help, enabling us to leave documents with the clients on the spot. We truly appreciate the Foundation’s generosity.

We assisted with rental arrears for a 37 year old physically disabled woman, who must constantly utilize a wheelchair to get around, she is the mother of 3 minor children. With our assistance in the rent arrears, we were able to keep her and her children in their home.
Your news of this totally unexpected and selfless generosity has me really at a loss for the proper words to describe how what you have done to help me. The effort and empathy and hard work on your part, well, it is more kindness then I have experienced in several years. I never expected this and your surprise during this very difficult time for me, well, I am so very appreciative and thankful to you and for all your hard work and for listening to me with such compassion.
I want you to know that you have given me hope, hope that I was beginning to think did not exist for me. I realize this is not going to be the outcome for all my problems but that you took the time and energy to help me is just about the most kind thing anyone has done for me. I will never forget how you have helped me and just know that what you have done for me, will never be forgotten!
A 71 year old Senior on a fixed income was served with an eviction action by her landlord. Through the intervention of the local Legal Services Program, the eviction was avoided. A small fund was available and a stove was purchased and installed for this elderly woman allowing her to meet her most basic living needs. This fund is now exhausted. A 72 year old separated woman living in a senior citizen building, surviving on a small Social Security check and Medicaid, had enough monthly income and benefits to meet her basic needs.
